United Airlines delays, cancellations and refunds: your rights

Checked 11 min read · 7 tables

$2,150 is the most compensation US federal rules make United Airlines pay, and only when you are bumped. A delayed or canceled domestic flight can open a refund, not cash for the wait. United flights departing EU or UK airports can add EU261 or UK261 compensation.

#Does United Airlines pay cash compensation for delays in the US?

No federal rule makes United Airlines pay cash for a delayed or canceled domestic flight. On 17 November 2025 the US Department of Transportation withdrew its 11 December 2024 advance notice on passenger rights, which had floated cash compensation. On a domestic trip, the law requires compensation only when you are bumped from an oversold flight.

Source: US DOT, Fly Rights — transportation.gov; FR 2025-20042 — federalregister.gov, checked 2026-09-15.

The DOT says it plainly. “Contrary to popular belief, for domestic itineraries airlines are not required to compensate passengers whose flights are delayed or canceled.” Anything else United gives you is its own policy.

On international trips, the DOT says you may be able to get back expenses from a delayed or canceled flight under Article 19 of the Montreal Convention. Of the rules on this page, only EU261 and UK261 pay a fixed sum for a late United flight. Both pay only on EU and UK departures.

Note your flight’s scheduled and actual times, then check the refund rules below. The delayed and canceled flight rights guide covers every US carrier.

#What has United Airlines committed to for controllable delays and cancellations?

3 hours of waiting is the threshold in the cash, credit and miles rows of the DOT’s Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard (last updated 11 Sep 2025). United shows “No” for cash and is not marked Yes for credit or miles. For controllable disruptions, United is listed with an overnight hotel, ground transport and rebooking on a partner airline.

United has promised no cash, credit or miles for a controllable wait of 3 hours or more. The DOT says it “will hold airlines accountable” if they break the promises in their plans.

One carve-out began on 10 December 2025 and runs until further notice or the end of the cause-of-delay rulemaking. The DOT’s consumer protection office will not treat cancellations or lengthy delays from unscheduled maintenance required by a non-deferrable airworthiness directive as “within airline control” for these commitments.

United’s own terms sit on its United Customer Commitment page; the airline commitments comparison covers other carriers. For a meal voucher, check that page or United’s column on the dashboard. On an overnight controllable delay, ask United for the hotel voucher or booking before you pay for a room.

#When must United Airlines refund your ticket?

7 business days for credit card purchases, and 20 calendar days for cash, check, debit card or other payments: that is the prompt-refund deadline in 14 CFR 260.2. It applies when United cancels or significantly changes your flight and you do not accept the alternative. A landing 3 hours or more later domestically, or 6 hours internationally, counts as significant.

Source: 14 CFR 260.2, 260.6, 260.7 — ecfr.gov; FR 2026-13675 — federalregister.gov, checked 2026-09-15.

A DOT refund returns the fare, taxes and ancillary fees in 3 cases: United cancels and offers no alternative, you reject the alternative, or you do not respond and the flight departs. A travel credit counts only if you affirmatively accept it after being told of your refund right, and it must stay valid for at least 5 years.

Worked case: United moves a 09:00 domestic departure to 12:30, same flight time. You would land 3 hours 30 minutes late. Turn the change down and the refund is due within 7 business days on a credit card purchase.

One exception lasts until 7 July 2027. The DOT does not enforce the cancellation-refund rules when a flight is merely renumbered, you are rebooked on it, and there is no “significant change or delay”.

Decline the credit and request the refund on United’s refund page.

#How much does United Airlines pay if you are bumped from an oversold flight?

$2,150 is the most United Airlines must pay under 14 CFR 250.5 if it bumps you against your will. That is 400% of your one-way fare, owed when your new flight gets in 2 hours or more late on a domestic trip, 4 hours or more late on an international trip from the US, or not at all.

The rule covers nonstop segments originating in the US on aircraft with 30 or more seats. Volunteers come first, and vouchers are allowed only if worth at least the cash amount and you are told so. The exceptions include missing the ticketing or check-in rules and being seated elsewhere on the flight at no extra charge.

On a single nonstop United flight, US and EU or UK bumping payments never overlap. 14 CFR 250 reaches only segments starting in the US, while article 4 of EU261 or UK261 reaches United only on departures from EU or UK airports.

Get your fare and the amount in writing before accepting a voucher, using the bumped flight compensation guide.

#Why do EU261 and UK261 cover United Airlines only on flights departing Europe or the UK?

USA-0116 is United Airlines, Inc.'s number on EASA’s third-country operators list. The CAA lists no UK licence for United. EU261 covers flights into the EU only on a Community carrier. UK261 covers flights into the UK only on a UK or Community carrier. So EU261 reaches United only on EU departures, UK261 only on UK departures.

Newark to an EU or UK airport on United is not covered; the same route back to Newark is. The Irish Aviation Authority illustrates it with New York-Dublin: covered on Aer Lingus, not on American Airlines. On a leg flown by Lufthansa under a United ticket, coverage follows the operating carrier. Its licence decides, not United’s.

#How do you claim from United for a flight from Europe or the UK?

Send a claim for United delay compensation through the United Customer Care form (united.com, listed in search results 14 Sep 2026). Give the flight number, date, arrival times and band amount, and cite article 7 (with article 6(3) for a UK delay, or Sturgeon for an EU one). Check the band with the compensation calculator.

Rather not claim yourself? AirHelp (third-party claim service) can handle United claims from EU or UK airports, no win no fee, and keeps a fee from any payout; the United Customer Care form stays free.

#Where do you escalate a refused United Airlines claim?

0 of the 2 CAA-approved ADR schemes list United Airlines. A refused claim on a UK departure can go to the CAA’s Passenger Advice and Complaints Team (PACT), which cannot make a binding decision. EU departures go to the departure country’s enforcement body; US refund or bumping disputes go to the DOT.

Source: CAA ADR and PACT pages — caa.co.uk; EU261 art. 16 — eur-lex.europa.eu; DOT complaints — transportation.gov, checked 2026-09-15.

PACT considers a complaint once you have written to United and dispute its reply or had none in 8 weeks. It refuses complaints with under a year left to sue. The limit is 6 years in England and Wales (Limitation Act 1980, section 9) and Northern Ireland (Limitation (Northern Ireland) Order 1989, article 4). In Scotland, file inside 5 years; no Scottish court has settled which rule applies.

#If United Airlines rejects your claim

A post in r/unitedairlines (u/SignificantCut5720, April 2026) reports an EU261 refusal on Amsterdam-Dulles. United said 2 hours 55 minutes late. The poster’s app said 2 hours 59.

“I read that the EU261 claim should count the min that the plane actually is at the gate, and opens the door; not just landing / taxing on the ground.” (passenger report)

Arrival does mean the moment the doors open and passengers may leave, not touchdown. Both figures still fall short of Sturgeon’s 3-hour line. Ask United for its door-open time before disputing minutes. A post in r/Flights (u/kryon89mag, March 2026) reports a UK261 refusal on a UK-US flight about 4.5 hours late.

“United initially denied the claim, citing “environmental damage” as an extraordinary circumstance. When I asked for details or evidence, they refused to provide anything specific and said maintenance records were “proprietary.”” (passenger report)

The poster says United paid £520 per passenger once the CAA got involved. A label alone does not meet article 2(o) of UK261, and the causes that do are set out separately. Ask United in writing for the cause and the measures it took, then use the refused compensation guide. Even a cause that holds removes the fixed £520 alone; the hotel, meals and re-routing survive it.

#How long does United Airlines take to pay compensation?

30 days to acknowledge and 60 days to respond in writing are the deadlines 14 CFR 259.7 sets for United Airlines to answer a complaint. An EU261 or UK261 reimbursement you choose is due within 7 days. A passenger bumped from an EU or UK departure is owed compensation immediately.

Source: 14 CFR 259.7 — ecfr.gov; EU261 arts. 4(3), 8(1) — eur-lex.europa.eu; UK261 arts. 4(3), 8(1) — legislation.gov.uk; CAA, How the CAA can help — caa.co.uk, checked 2026-09-15.

An ignored UK261 claim runs longer. PACT can take it after 8 weeks without a reply. Its guideline then allows about 1 week for initial assessment, 4 weeks for United’s response and 5 weeks for a final assessment. That is at least 18 weeks from your first letter, 2 more if the case is challenged, and the CAA says current timescales are longer.

Diary the 8-week mark the day you send your claim.

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are also third-country operators. Lufthansa is not: its listed German entities are Community carriers. Delta, unlike United, is an AviationADR member; see the ADR map.

#FAQ

How do I claim compensation from United Airlines?
2 hours 55 minutes was United's arrival figure on an Amsterdam to Dulles refusal reported on Reddit in April 2026; the passenger's app said 2 hours 59. Both miss the three-hour line, and both show what an EU261 claim must pin down: give United's Customer Care form the door-open time, the flight number and date, and your band amount.
Does United Airlines compensate for delayed flights?
3 hours or more late is the EU261 and UK261 line for fixed compensation, which reaches United only on EU or UK departures: €250-€600 or £220-£520, barring proven extraordinary circumstances. For a domestic US flight, no federal rule requires cash, and the DOT dashboard (last updated 11 Sep 2025) shows United committing to no cash, travel credit or miles.
Does EU261 apply to United Airlines flights from Europe?
€250 to €600 is what EU261 pays on a United Airlines flight departing an EU airport that reaches your final destination 3 hours or more late, by distance, barring proven extraordinary circumstances. EU261 does not cover United flights from the US into the EU: United Airlines, Inc. is a third-country operator, and inbound coverage requires a Community carrier.
How long does United Airlines take to pay compensation?
30 days to acknowledge and 60 days to respond in writing are the DOT deadlines for United Airlines to answer a complaint under 14 CFR 259.7. A US refund is due within 7 business days on a credit card purchase. On a UK departure, PACT opens after 8 weeks without a reply and gives United 4 weeks to respond.
