Breeze Airways delays and cancellations: what the contract promises

Checked 8 min read

2 hours is the line in Breeze Airways' own contract of carriage: past that point on a delay, you can rebook free between the same airports, within 14 days. Vouchers and expense reimbursement are offered “solely as a courtesy,” the contract says, never as an obligation. Breeze sits outside the DOT’s nine-carrier dashboard entirely, so this contract, not a federal commitment page, is the document this page quotes for what Breeze offers.

#Does Breeze Airways pay cash for a delay?

No federal rule makes Breeze Airways pay cash for a US domestic delay, and its contract of carriage, updated 20 Mar 2025, promises no cash payment. One situation alone forces a payment on a domestic trip: involuntary denied boarding from a flight the airline oversold.

Source: DOT Fly Rights — transportation.gov; Federal Register 2025-20042 — federalregister.gov, checked 2026-09-22.

On 17 Nov 2025 DOT withdrew the advance notice it had published on 11 Dec 2024 on cash compensation, rebooking and amenities, so that proposal binds no carrier, Breeze included. Breeze is not one of the nine airlines on the DOT dashboard, so there is no dashboard commitment to quote. Its contract of carriage, section 8.B, is where its promises are written, and the next section quotes them directly.

International trips run on a separate rule: under article 19 of the Montreal Convention you may be able to recover expenses a delay caused by claiming with the airline.

Write down the reason Breeze gave for your delay; the contract treats a weather or air-traffic-control cause differently from other causes.

#What does Breeze’s contract promise when a flight is delayed or canceled?

2 hours is Breeze’s own free-rebooking threshold: past that point, its contract of carriage lets you rebook on Breeze between the same two airports at no charge, within 14 days. Any vouchers and reimbursement past that stay entirely at Breeze’s discretion.

Breeze’s contract states: “Breeze will make reasonable efforts to mitigate inconveniences to Guests resulting from a flight delay, cancellation, flight modification, or schedule change. Breeze may provide limited electronic vouchers and/or expense reimbursement options to Guests as reasonably necessary to maintain Guests' safety, health, and welfare. Any such electronic vouchers and/or reimbursement options are provided solely as a courtesy to Guests, and Breeze is not under any obligation to provide electronic vouchers, reimbursement, amenities, or services.” No meal or hotel duty appears anywhere in that language.

Weather and air traffic control get a narrower promise still: “if a Breeze flight cancellation, modification, or misconnection is caused by severe weather, Air Traffic Control decisions, or other issues outside of the control of Breeze, Breeze will not offer expense reimbursements or additional compensation beyond what is required by DOT regulations.” DOT rules require no compensation for a domestic delay or cancellation, so for a weather-caused cancellation, modification or misconnection on a domestic trip the contract promises no expense reimbursement at all; a refund after a cancellation you did not accept is a separate federal duty, covered below.

Ask for the free rebooking in writing the moment your delay passes two hours; the contract sets no other automatic remedy.

#Why is Breeze missing from the DOT dashboard and the BTS tables?

9 is the count of carriers on the DOT Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard, and Breeze is not one of them. No BTS on-time percentage exists for Breeze either, because Breeze is not a separate reporting carrier in the July 2026 BTS file.

Source: DOT Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard (last updated 11 Sep 2025) — transportation.gov; BTS Airline On-Time Statistics and Delay Causes (July 2026) — transtats.bts.gov, checked 2026-09-22.

Absence from the dashboard is a fact about the dashboard, not a gap in this page’s research: the table has nine carrier columns, and Breeze is not among them. The dashboard displays commitments that airlines make in their customer service plans, which DOT says airlines “are required to adhere to”. With no Breeze column, there is no dashboard commitment to set beside the contract, and this page quotes the contract instead.

Breeze Airways is the trading name of Breeze Aviation Group, Inc., its contract’s own opening definition. An EASA third-country-operator entry reading “UP IN THE AIR LLC, DBA BREEZE AIR” exists on the same list, but the name does not match Breeze Aviation Group, Inc., so it is not cited here as evidence for Breeze’s own licence status.

Quote section 8.B by number when you write to Breeze about a delay, and a federal rule by number when you write about a refund.

#When must Breeze refund your ticket?

3 hours domestic, 6 hours international: cross either line, or have your flight canceled outright, and Breeze owes the fare back unless you accept its alternative. Payment follows in 7 business days by credit card, 20 calendar days any other way.

Source: 14 CFR 260.2, 260.6, 260.7 — ecfr.gov, checked 2026-09-22.

Federal refund law overrides the contract’s courtesy language on this one point: whatever section 8.B says about vouchers, 14 CFR 260.6(a) still requires a full refund of fare, taxes and ancillary fees once Breeze cancels, moves your departure or arrival past the hour threshold for your itinerary, swaps the airport, or adds a connection, and you did not accept what was offered instead. A passenger who never responds and never flies is still owed the money; silence is not acceptance.

A travel credit replaces that refund only if Breeze offered it as an explicit alternative, valid at least 5 years, and you affirmatively accepted it.

Decline the rebooking you do not want in writing, and keep the message: the refund right turns on what you accepted, not on what Breeze offered.

#Where do you escalate a refused Breeze claim?

30 days to acknowledge your complaint, 60 days to answer it in writing: 14 CFR 259.7(c) sets those deadlines for Breeze the same as for every US carrier. Miss either one, or refuse a refund 14 CFR 260 requires, and the next stop is a DOT complaint.

Source: 14 CFR 259.7(c) — ecfr.gov; DOT, File a consumer complaint — transportation.gov, checked 2026-09-22.

Write to Breeze first, naming the flight number, the date and the specific contract clause or refund rule you rely on. From there, the OACP complaint form routes your case to DOT, which directs Breeze to respond to you, copying itself, and investigates only a sample of the complaints it receives rather than every one filed.

#If Breeze Airways rejects your claim

Name the specific rule the refusal breaks, the way you would with any airline that refuses a claim. A refund withheld after a cancellation you did not accept is 14 CFR 260.6(a), a federal duty section 8.B cannot override. A free rebooking refused past the two-hour mark is a dispute under the contract, argued on its own terms, not on a federal right.

No

Departing a UK or EU airport

DOT refund rules on a flight to the US

Yes, on any airline departing there, but Breeze is not matched on the EASA list, so no such flight is expected

Arriving in the UK or EU from outside them

For a Breeze passenger the first row is the one that counts: federal rules plus the contract, nothing from UK or EU law.

Not your situation? Flights to, from and within Canada run on the Air Passenger Protection Regulations. A trip starting in Europe belongs to EU261 or UK261; see which law covers my flight. Every US carrier is covered from the US DOT hub.

Closest cards on the same US-domestic gap: Allegiant Air sits on the DOT dashboard where Breeze does not; Frontier Airlines is on the dashboard but marks partner rebooking and hotel “No”. Keep a copy of everything you send to Breeze.

#FAQ

Does Breeze Airways pay for a hotel if my flight is canceled?
No. Breeze's contract of carriage, s.8.B, states no hotel obligation and calls any voucher or expense reimbursement it offers "solely as a courtesy," never a duty. Federal law adds no hotel requirement either; only the tarmac rule's food-and-water duty applies, and only during a delay on the aircraft itself.
Can I change a delayed Breeze flight for free?
Yes, once the delay passes 2 hours. Breeze's contract allows a free rebooking to the same departure and arrival airports, within 14 days, for a delay of more than two hours. A delay of 2 hours or less does not trigger this contract term.
Is Breeze Airways on the DOT delay dashboard?
No. The DOT Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard lists 9 carriers, and Breeze is not one of them. That leaves no dashboard commitment to quote, and Breeze's own contract of carriage offers little beyond free rebooking after a delay of more than 2 hours.
Does Breeze reimburse expenses after a weather cancellation?
No more than DOT requires. Breeze's contract says that for a cancellation "caused by severe weather, Air Traffic Control decisions, or other issues outside of the control of Breeze," it "will not offer expense reimbursements or additional compensation beyond what is required by DOT regulations". A fare refund stays owed if you do not accept the alternative offered.
