Hawaiian Airlines delays, cancellations and refunds: your rights
2 hours is where Hawaiian Airlines' own commitments start: a meal voucher once a controllable delay reaches that mark, then at 3 hours a choice between a discount code of at least $50 and at least 2,000 Atmos Rewards points, given only if you ask. Cash compensation reads “No” on the DOT dashboard, as it does for all nine airlines listed there. On a US domestic trip, federal law requires compensation in one case only: being bumped from an oversold flight.

#Does Hawaiian Airlines pay cash for a delay?
“No” is Hawaiian Airlines' cash entry on the DOT dashboard, as it is for all nine listed carriers on the page last updated 11 Sep 2025. On a US domestic trip, one thing alone turns a payment into a federal duty: being bumped from an oversold flight.

DOT withdrew its 11 Dec 2024 advance notice on passenger compensation rules as of 17 Nov 2025, without adopting a rule. Hawaiian’s dashboard column reads “Yes” for rebooking on Hawaiian or a partner airline, a meal or meal voucher, hotel, ground transport, credit or voucher and miles; only cash reads “No”. On cash, credit, miles, hotel and partner rebooking it matches Alaska Airlines' column. The full nine-airline table, with each carrier’s row set against the others, lives on the Alaska Airlines card rather than repeated here.
International trips run on a separate rule: under article 19 of the Montreal Convention you may be able to recover expenses a delay caused by claiming with the airline, and a trip starting at a UK or EU airport adds UK261 or EU261, covered further down this page.
Write down when the delay was announced and what reason Hawaiian gave; that reason decides which of its own commitments, if any, applies.
#What does Hawaiian give after a controllable delay of 2 or 3 hours?
2 hours triggers a meal voucher under Hawaiian’s own commitment; 3 hours adds a choice between a discount code of at least $50 and at least 2,000 Atmos Rewards points, given only if you ask, and only when Hawaiian caused the delay. Cash is never one of the choices offered.
Hawaiian’s exact wording: “For flights delayed two or more hours due to circumstance within our control, if you decide to continue your travel, we will offer a reasonable meal voucher to each ticketed guest at the airport. Specific options may depend on airport vendor availability.” At three hours, a second commitment starts: “if, due to circumstances within our control, your flight is delayed by three hours or more, or canceled such that you must wait three hours or more for a new flight, you can ask us and we will provide your choice” of the discount code or the points. “You can ask us” is the operative phrase: nothing pays out automatically.
A delay that begins at 14:00 crosses the meal-voucher line at 16:00 and the code-or-points line at 17:00, on the same disruption. Neither commitment appears as a dollar figure on the DOT dashboard; the dashboard records only that a credit-or-voucher and a miles commitment exist, and Hawaiian’s own commitment pages set the actual amounts. The dashboard’s “Yes” binds through the customer service plan DOT holds airlines to, not as a right created by statute.
Ask which commitment applies to your specific delay, and get the offer in writing before you spend your own money on a meal or a room.
#When does Hawaiian owe you a hotel?
100 miles or more from home is the distance test in Hawaiian’s hotel commitment: an overnight stay that far away, caused by a cancellation or delay within Hawaiian’s control, brings a hotel voucher or, lacking one, reimbursement of reasonable hotel and ground-transport costs, if hotels are available near the airport.
Hawaiian’s own wording: “If you experience an overnight stay at an airport located 100 or more miles away from your home because your flight is canceled or delayed due to circumstances within our control, complimentary hotel accommodation will be provided if there are available hotels in the area where the delay or cancellation occurs.” Rooms cover single or family occupancy, plus round-trip ground transport to a hotel near the airport.
Three conditions all have to hold: the distance, the controllable cause, and hotel availability in the area. None of the three shows up as a value on the DOT dashboard, which marks only that a hotel commitment exists for Hawaiian (Yes, the same value as Alaska Airlines), leaving the terms to this commitment page. One carve-out is fixed by DOT: since 10 Dec 2025 its consumer office does not treat a cancellation or lengthy delay caused by unscheduled maintenance that a non-deferrable airworthiness directive requires as within the airline’s control for these commitments.
Keep the hotel receipt and the reason Hawaiian gave for the disruption; both decide whether reimbursement applies.
#When must Hawaiian refund your ticket?
3 hours domestic, 6 hours international: cross either line, or have your flight canceled outright, and Hawaiian owes the fare back unless you accept the alternative it offers. Payment follows in 7 business days on a credit card, 20 calendar days any other way.
Source: 14 CFR 260.2, 260.6, 260.7 — ecfr.gov, checked 2026-09-22.
A refund becomes due when Hawaiian cancels a flight, pulls the departure earlier, or pushes the arrival later by the hour threshold for your itinerary, swaps the airport, adds a connection, or downgrades your class of service, and you did not accept what was offered instead. Silence is not acceptance: a passenger who never replies and never flies is still owed the money, under 14 CFR 260.6(a). Picture a domestic itinerary re-timed so that your final arrival lands 3 hours 5 minutes past schedule: the domestic refund line is crossed, even though nothing was canceled.
A travel credit replaces the refund only where Hawaiian offered it as an explicit alternative, valid at least 5 years, and you affirmatively accepted it. Where a flight is merely renumbered, you are rebooked on it and nothing else changes significantly, DOT does not enforce the cancellation-refund requirement until 7 Jul 2027.
Decline the rebooking you do not want in writing, and keep a copy: the refund right turns on what you accepted, not on what Hawaiian offered.
#Which rules apply to a Hawaiian flight from the UK or Europe?
USA-0312 is Hawaiian Airlines' entry on the EASA third-country operator list, shared with Alaska Airlines; Hawaiian is not on the CAA’s UK Type A list either. A flight departing a UK or EU airport still gets UK261 or EU261 protection regardless of carrier; one arriving from outside the UK or EU on Hawaiian gets neither.
Which rules apply to your Hawaiian Airlines flight
Your Hawaiian Airlines flight | US DOT $ | UK261 £ |
|---|---|---|
Within the US | Refunds on the 3-hour lines, own commitments above | No |
Departing a UK or EU airport | Refunds on the 6-hour lines if a covered flight | Yes, on any airline, from that airport |
Arriving at a US airport from outside the US | Refunds on the 6-hour lines if a covered flight | Only if the departure airport was in the UK or EU |
Arriving in the UK or EU from outside them, on Hawaiian | DOT refund rules if it departs a US airport | No: Hawaiian is neither a UK air carrier nor a Community carrier |
Source: 14 CFR 260.2 — ecfr.gov; EU261 art. 3(1) — eur-lex.europa.eu; UK261 art. 3(1) — legislation.gov.uk; EASA third-country operator list — easa.europa.eu, checked 2026-09-22.
No source read for this page shows Hawaiian flying to or from a UK or EU airport, so the UK and EU rows are written conditionally rather than applied to a named route. If your itinerary does depart a UK or EU airport, the departure rule above governs whichever airline operates it.
Not your situation? Flights to, from and within Canada run on the Air Passenger Protection Regulations. A trip starting in Europe belongs to EU261 or UK261; see also which law covers my flight. Every US carrier is covered from the US DOT hub, and a mixed US/European itinerary is covered at transatlantic flight compensation.
Read the departure airport off your booking first: it decides which rulebook, if any beyond DOT, reaches your flight.
#Where do you escalate a refused Hawaiian Airlines claim?
30 days to acknowledge a complaint, 60 days to answer it in writing: those are the deadlines 14 CFR 259.7(c) gives Hawaiian Airlines once you file. Miss either one, or refuse a refund 14 CFR 260 requires, and the next stop is the DOT Office of Aviation Consumer Protection.
Source: 14 CFR 259.7(c) — ecfr.gov; DOT, File a consumer complaint — transportation.gov, checked 2026-09-22.
Ask Hawaiian directly first, in writing, naming the flight number, the date and the specific commitment or refund rule you are relying on. DOT wants that step taken before it gets involved. The case then goes through the OACP complaint form or by phone on 855-368-4200; DOT directs Hawaiian to answer you, with a copy to itself, and investigates only a sample of the complaints it receives rather than every one filed.
#If Hawaiian Airlines rejects your claim
Name the rule the refusal breaks, the way you would with any airline that refuses a claim. A refund withheld after a cancellation you did not accept is 14 CFR 260.6(a); a meal voucher or hotel promised on the commitment pages is neither a refund nor bumping pay, since it rests on the customer service plan DOT holds Hawaiian to, not on a federal cash right.
Closest cards on the same DOT dashboard entry: Alaska Airlines shares Hawaiian’s exact column; Southwest Airlines and JetBlue share the credit-or-voucher “Yes” but are not marked “Yes” for miles. Keep a copy of every message you send to Hawaiian.
