Changing the name on a flight ticket: fees and rules at Ryanair, easyJet, BA, Jet2 and TUI

Checked 10 min read

A name change on a flight ticket costs £115 per passenger online at Ryanair and £50 per person per booking at TUI Airways, while British Airways does not transfer flight-only tickets. Fixing a typo is a separate, often free, process. Every fee below is an airline contract term read on 2026-10-20, not a legal right.

#Can you change the name on a flight ticket?

Yes at 4 of the 5 airlines here, for a fee set by their own terms: Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2 and TUI Airways accept a new passenger, and British Airways does not. The statutory transfer right in regulation 9 of the 2018 Package Travel Regulations covers package holidays only, not flight-only tickets.

Ryanair’s terms say you cannot transfer a reservation unless you have arranged a name change and paid the name-change fee. easyJet’s terms allow a new passenger for a Name Change Fee but forbid resale: easyJet may cancel a booking without refund if it reasonably believes the ticket was resold or offered for resale. Jet2’s terms allow name changes, the first one per booking for an administration fee alone, and recommend one when you cancel, so someone else can travel in your place. TUI Airways' conditions say it carries only the passenger named in the ticket and charges for any change.

British Airways says on its website: “You cannot transfer your ticket.” If events beyond your control prevent you from travelling on a non-refundable fare, clause 3e gives a credit for the non-refundable part, which you or any person you choose can use for future BA travel; BA may take a reasonable administration fee from it. Clause 3f issues a new ticket to somebody else only for a package.

In CAP 1815, its June 2019 review of airline contracts, the Civil Aviation Authority called a blanket transfer ban with no other remedy “disproportionate”. A passenger who cannot travel, it said, should be able to transfer the ticket or get a credit note for the non-refundable part. That is a 2019 view, not a rule.

If nobody can take your seat, read the guide to cancelling your own flight before you pay a name-change fee.

#How much does a name change cost at each UK airline?

A Ryanair name change costs £115 online or £160 if an agent makes it, per passenger. An easyJet name change costs £60 online or £65 through Customer Services, per passenger per flight. A Jet2 name change costs £35 in Manage My Booking or at an airport desk, or £45 through its Contact Centre, per person per one-way flight.

The charging unit decides the total. Ryanair and TUI Airways charge once per passenger per booking, and the change must cover every flight on it; easyJet and Jet2 charge again for each flight, so a return doubles their fee.

Jet2 charges only the fee for the first name change on a booking. Each further change adds any rise in the fare, a lower fare earns no refund, and discounts on the original fare no longer apply. Ryanair’s Flexi Plus fare still pays the name-change fee. easyJet says names cannot be changed with Flex Pass.

TUI’s own pages differ on its fee. The Conditions of Carriage, which TUI’s flight-only bookings follow, set a flat £50 “at any time”; the help-centre FAQ, written for holiday bookings, says the charge “depends on when you request the change” and that you must contact TUI.

Price the change for every passenger and flight, then compare it with a new ticket in the right name.

#How do you fix a spelling mistake for free?

Ryanair and easyJet correct spelling mistakes of up to 3 characters per name free online; at Ryanair that is once per passenger, up to 48 hours before departure. British Airways says most spelling mistakes are corrected by phone without a fee when every flight on the ticket is BA’s. The free route covers a genuine mistake, not another person.

Source: Ryanair UK terms 13.5, Help Centre; easyJet terms s.6, Fees and Charges; BA name FAQ; Jet2.com FAQ, terms 25.4; TUI Airways Conditions of Carriage 3.2; CAA CAP 1815 — airline websites, caa.co.uk, checked 2026-10-20.

Ryanair also swaps a reversed first name and surname free within 48 hours of booking. Its free fixes run through My Booking and apply only if Ryanair reasonably believes it is a genuine mistake. A switch between maiden and married name is free too, through website chat, once your passport shows the new name; have a copy of your marriage certificate as proof.

easyJet fixes up to 3 characters per name, and title changes, free on its website or app; longer fixes go to Customer Services. It wants the full name on your ID, middle names included. Ryanair needs only the first name and surname to match.

For a British Airways name change to fix a typo, the free phone correction has one cost: if taxes or surcharges have changed since booking, you pay the difference. Editing Advance Passenger Information in Manage My Booking does not change the e-ticket.

Jet2’s pages disagree. Its FAQ says genuine spelling errors are corrected without charge, up to 3 letters in Manage My Booking and 4 or more by phone or email; its terms, clause 25.4, say such a correction still carries “the appropriate charges”. TUI Airways' conditions correct spelling free unless the change amounts to a name substitution.

In its 2019 review the CAA said online corrections should be free, and found Ryanair short because larger corrections then cost the full transfer fee.

Fix the name as soon as you spot it, and call it a spelling correction.

#What are the deadlines for changing a name?

Ryanair takes name changes up to 24 hours before scheduled departure online and up to 2 hours before by phone or at the airport ticket desk. easyJet’s cut-off is 2 hours before departure online or by phone. Jet2 needs 6 hours. TUI Airways' Conditions of Carriage give no cut-off, and BA transfers no flight-only ticket.

Source: Ryanair UK terms 13.4 and Help Centre; easyJet terms s.6 and help page “Name changes”; Jet2.com terms 25.2 and 25.4; TUI Airways Conditions of Carriage 3.2 — airline websites, checked 2026-10-20.

Once one of the flights has departed, Ryanair’s Help Centre says the name can no longer be changed. easyJet’s limits run from the scheduled departure of your original flight or the one you are moving to, whichever is earlier, and do not move if the flight is delayed. At bag drop, easyJet takes changes until 1 hour before departure, or 90 minutes at some airports.

Check-in changes the channel. Ryanair says you contact it to be unchecked, then change the name online or in the app. Jet2 takes changes after check-in only through its call centre.

At Ryanair, open My Bookings or My Trips in the app, choose “Change a name”, edit the passenger, select “Check the price” and pay. At easyJet, sign in with the booking’s email address and open View Bookings. At Jet2, use Manage My Booking or an airport sales desk, with the new passenger’s full name, address, email and phone number ready. Ryanair, Jet2 and TUI apply the change to every flight on the booking.

Travel-agent bookings follow the agent. easyJet says the agent must process changes at least 2 hours before departure, and BA says it cannot change tickets an agent issued. If an agent’s booking does not match your passport, Ryanair says to finish the name change and check in at the airport, then ask the agent to reimburse the charge if the error was theirs.

Change it online where you can: that saves £45 at Ryanair, £10 per flight at Jet2 and £5 per flight at easyJet.

#Can you transfer a package holiday to someone else?

Yes, by law. Regulation 9 of the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018 lets you transfer a package to a person who meets all its conditions, if you give the organiser reasonable notice on a durable medium; 7 days or more before the package starts always counts as reasonable.

Source: Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018 (SI 2018/634), reg. 9 — legislation.gov.uk, checked 2026-10-20.

The organiser must tell you what the transfer costs and prove those costs. They must not be unreasonable and must not exceed what the transfer cost the organiser, and you and the new traveller are jointly and severally liable for them. The right covers package travel contracts only, not a flight-only ticket.

Airline package terms point the same way. Ryanair’s let you transfer a package with reasonable notice, paying the fees that arise, including the flight’s name-change fee. British Airways' clause 3f reissues a ticket to someone else only for a package, but still cites the 1992 Regulations, which the 2018 Regulations replaced.

Cite regulation 9 of the 2018 Regulations when you write to the organiser, and send the notice at least 7 days before the package starts.
