Denver (DEN): what you get when your flight is delayed
73.86% of Denver’s July 2026 domestic arrivals landed on time, the best on-time share of the five US airports this site compares and 4.4 points above the 69.49% national rate. Cancellations ran at 0.86%, so a flight that still operates late, not a canceled one, is the disruption a Denver passenger is more likely to meet. Denver airport delay compensation is not a federal program. What you get depends on the airline’s own commitments and a 3-hour refund line.

- US DOT $Refundno fixed cash for a delay; refund after a significant change
- EU261 €€250–€600per passenger, 3 h or more late at arrival
- UK261 ££220–£520per passenger, 3 h or more late at arrival
#Which rules cover delayed flights departing Denver?
Article 3(1)(b) of EU261 decides a Denver-to-Europe flight: covered when a Community carrier operates it, not when a US carrier does. The UK version of the same article covers a Denver-to-UK flight only on a UK or Community carrier. US DOT rules cover every Denver departure, and none of them pays cash for a domestic delay.
The US-carrier half follows from the same article. EU261 covers a US airline on a departure from an EU airport, never on an arrival into the EU, and UK261 reaches it only on a departure from the UK. So the operating airline, not the airport, decides whether a delayed Denver flight to Europe carries a European payment.
For an international itinerary, DOT points to a third route: under article 19 of the Montreal Convention you may be able to recover expenses caused by the delay by claiming with the airline. On a domestic trip, DOT says “there are no federal requirements” for what an airline does for delayed passengers waiting at the airport.
This page names no airline as flying any particular route from Denver, so check the operating carrier on your booking. Canada’s APPR can apply on a connection into Canada; the EU261 and UK261 hubs cover the European amounts, the regime finder sorts a mixed booking, and the US DOT hub covers the other federal rules. San Francisco sits on the same airport index.

#How did Denver arrivals perform in July 2026?
73.86% of Denver’s 29,500 domestic arrivals landed on time in July 2026, the best on-time share of the five US airports this site compares. Cancellations ran at 0.86% and diversions at 0.91%. Nine carriers reported Denver data to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics that month, and the national on-time rate was 69.49%.
San Francisco's on-time share was 51.59%, so Denver beat it by 22.3 points. The ranking holds only inside this five-airport comparison, not nationally. These figures cover only domestic arrivals of carriers reporting to BTS, for one month, so international flights and foreign carriers such as British Airways and Lufthansa are not in them, and Denver’s rate says nothing about its international departures.
BTS on-time arrivals, July 2026 | Denver | National |
|---|---|---|
Domestic arrivals counted | 29,500 | 697,754 |
On time | 73.86% | 69.49% |
Canceled | 0.86% | 2.79% |
Diverted | 0.91% | 0.52% |
With cancellations under a third of the national rate, the question at Denver is usually what a long delay gets you.

#What do airlines give for a long delay at Denver when the flight still operates?
3 hours of waiting is where the DOT dashboard’s meal-voucher row starts, and an overnight delay is where its hotel row applies. Both are airline commitments for disruptions within the airline’s control, not federal rights. All nine carriers on the dashboard mark cash compensation “No”. A refund is a separate rule, triggered by arrival delay.
The DOT Cancellation and Delay Dashboard, last updated 11 September 2025, lists nine carriers: Alaska, Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Southwest and United. Hotel and ground transport are marked “Yes” for all of them except Frontier; credit or voucher is “Yes” only for Alaska, Hawaiian, JetBlue and Southwest. The meal row exists, but we record no per-carrier values for it, so check your airline’s own plan. DOT says it will hold airlines accountable for those promises.
The refund rule works on the clock. Under 14 CFR 260.2 a domestic flight arriving 3 hours or more late, or an international one 6 hours or more late, is significantly delayed; decline the airline’s alternative and the fare, taxes and fees come back.
Worked example: the airline retimes a Denver-to-Chicago flight so that it will land 4 hours late. Nobody owes cash for the wait. Decline to travel on it and the 3-hour line makes the refund due; fly it, and the refund route closes, leaving whatever meal or hotel commitment the operating airline lists. The full table is on the DOT commitments page, the refund mechanics on the delayed and canceled flight rights page.

#Where do you complain after a long delay at Denver?
14 CFR 259.7(c) gives an airline 30 days to acknowledge your written complaint about a long Denver delay and 60 days to answer it in full. If it lists a hotel or meal commitment on the DOT dashboard and did not deliver, say so, then escalate to the DOT’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection.
The strongest Denver complaint quotes the airline’s own promise back to it. Name the dashboard row, the hours you waited, the cause the gate agent gave, and what you were actually given. Attach receipts for any hotel or meal you paid for yourself; a missed commitment is a concrete point, not a complaint about bad luck.
If the reply is missing or inadequate, file online at secure.dot.gov/air-travel-complaint or by post to the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection, U.S. DOT, 1200 New Jersey Ave SE, Washington DC 20590. The DOT directs the airline to answer you with a copy to the Department. Service complaints are reviewed on a targeted or sample basis rather than one by one; civil-rights complaints are the exception.
A Denver flight into the EU on a Community carrier, or into the UK on a UK or Community carrier, also has a European claim, which runs to the airline and then to the enforcement body of the arrival country, the Civil Aviation Authority for the UK. The US complaint page covers the DOT route step by step.
