American Airlines refund: how DOT refund rules apply to AA tickets
An American Airlines refund under US Department of Transportation rules is money back, not a trip credit. You get it when American cancels your flight or changes it significantly and you do not accept the alternative it offers. 14 CFR Part 260 sets the deadline: 7 business days for credit card purchases, 20 calendar days for cash, check, debit card or other forms of purchase.
This page applies those rules to AA tickets and to American’s own request process. Cancelling a fresh booking yourself is a different rule: the 24-hour cancellation rule. The federal rules for every US airline sit in the airline refund rules guide; route-by-route coverage, bumping and EU261 or UK261 claims are on the American Airlines page.
#When does American Airlines owe you a cash refund?
3 hours or more on a domestic trip, 6 hours or more on an international one: if American Airlines moves your departure that much earlier or your arrival that much later, or cancels the flight, you are owed a full refund of the fare, taxes and ancillary fees unless you accept the alternative.

What American Airlines did | Refund trigger under 14 CFR 260.2 |
|---|---|
Canceled the flight | A flight with a specific flight number published in the computer reservation system when you bought the ticket was not operated |
Moved your departure earlier | 3 hours or more (domestic), 6 hours or more (international) |
Moved your arrival later | 3 hours or more (domestic), 6 hours or more (international) |
Changed the airport | A different origin or destination airport |
Added a stop | More connection points than the original itinerary |
Downgraded you | A lower class of service |
Changed connections or aircraft for a passenger with a disability | Disability-specific connection or aircraft changes |
One row is enough. A domestic arrival moved 2 hours 59 minutes later does not qualify; from 3 hours 0 minutes, it does.
Leaving American’s offer unanswered does not cost you the refund. Under 14 CFR 260.6(a) the DOT automatic refund covers 3 cases. American canceled and offered no alternative. You rejected what it offered. Or you never replied and did not fly, in which case the refund falls due once the flight departs, or by the original departure date.
A new flight number on its own is the exception. Where American merely renumbers your flight, moves your booking onto it and makes no “significant change or delay”, DOT does not enforce the cancellation-refund requirements of 14 CFR 260.6, 260.9 and 399.80(l). That pause began on 5 Dec 2025 and now runs to 7 July 2027. A trip you cancel yourself, including under the 24-hour rule, is not one of these triggers.

Put American’s new departure and arrival times next to the originals and note the gap in hours and minutes before you reply to its message.
#How fast must American Airlines pay the refund?
7 business days for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for cash, check, debit card or other forms of purchase: that is a “prompt refund” under 14 CFR 260.2. The payment method on your American Airlines booking decides which deadline applies, on a domestic trip and an international one alike.
Source: 14 CFR 260.2 (“prompt refund”) — ecfr.gov, checked 2026-09-15.
How you paid American Airlines | Prompt refund deadline |
|---|---|
Credit card | 7 business days |
Cash, check, debit card or another form of purchase | 20 calendar days |
Paid with a debit card? Your deadline is 20 calendar days, the same as cash.
Reported by passengers on public forums: first reply or decision on a compensation or refund claim after a median of 1.5 days (n = 6 posts, May 2026–Sep 2026). That counts replies, not money received (payout times data).
Flying American from an EU airport? EU261 covers that departure, and its article 8 gives you a choice that includes reimbursement of the full cost of the ticket within seven days, after a cancellation or a delay of at least 5 hours. From a UK airport, article 8 of UK261 sets the same seven days. The American Airlines page and the transatlantic flight guide show which of those flights qualify and the EU261 and UK261 rules on them.

Check the payment method on your American Airlines receipt and write down the date you asked for the refund.
#Can American Airlines give you a trip credit instead?
5 years is the minimum life of any trip credit or voucher American Airlines offers in place of a refund owed under 14 CFR 260.6. It has to come as an explicit alternative that tells you about your right to a refund. It replaces the refund only if you affirmatively accept it.
Source: 14 CFR 260.6(c) and 260.7 — ecfr.gov, checked 2026-09-15.
Accept an AA trip credit and the refund for that ticket is gone. Leave the offer unanswered and the refund stays owed, because acceptance has to be affirmative.
The DOT Cancellation and Delay Dashboard is a separate list. It shows what American promises when a disruption is within its control. Its credit row needs a wait of 3 hours or more.
DOT dashboard commitment (page last updated 11 Sep 2025) | American Airlines |
|---|---|
Cash compensation, wait of 3 hours or more | No |
Credit or voucher, wait of 3 hours or more | Not marked "Yes" |
Frequent-flyer miles, wait of 3 hours or more | Not marked "Yes" |
Hotel for an overnight stay | Yes |
Ground transport to and from the hotel | Yes |
Rebooking on a partner airline | Yes |

No row on the dashboard promises American Airlines passengers cash.
American is held to these promises through its own customer service plan; they are not federal rights. DOT’s wording: “Airlines are required to adhere to the promises that they make in their customer service plan.” DOT’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection does not treat cancellations or lengthy delays from unscheduled maintenance required by a non-deferrable airworthiness directive as “within airline control” for these commitments. That carve-out runs from 10 Dec 2025 until further notice or the end of the cause-of-delay rulemaking. The customer service commitments table compares all 9 airlines.
Decline the credit in writing and keep the message, so your rejection is on record.
#Do you get bag fees and extras back from American Airlines?
12 hours on a domestic trip, 15 or 30 hours on an international one: a checked bag not delivered within that time is significantly delayed. American Airlines must then refund its bag fee once you file a Mishandled Baggage Report. Paid extras come back with the fare whenever a cancellation or significant change triggers your refund.
Source: 14 CFR 260.2 (“significantly delayed checked bag”), 260.5(b), 260.6(a) — ecfr.gov, checked 2026-09-15.
Your itinerary | Bag significantly delayed if not delivered within |
|---|---|
Domestic | 12 hours |
International, nonstop US-foreign segment of 12 hours or less | 15 hours |
International, nonstop US-foreign segment of more than 12 hours | 30 hours |
On an international trip, the length of the nonstop US-foreign segment picks the line.
Take a bag that needs 13 hours 30 minutes to reach you. On a domestic trip that is past 12 hours, so the bag fee comes back. On an international itinerary whose nonstop US-foreign segment is 12 hours or less, the same bag is inside the 15-hour line and earns no fee refund on that ground.
Extras need their own paperwork under American’s refund policy. Each American Airlines refund request covers one ticket number. The Request a refund page (aa.com, listed in search results 14 Sep 2026) says: “You’ll need to submit a separate request for each ticket number associated with your trip.” The same search listing continues, cut off mid-sentence: “Extras like seats and bags have unique ticket ...”

List every ticket number on your receipt, including any seat or bag purchase, then file one request per number.
#What if American Airlines refuses or delays your refund?
30 days to acknowledge your complaint and 60 days to answer in writing: American Airlines has to meet both under 14 CFR 259.7(c). If the refund is refused or late, write to American citing 14 CFR 260.6(a), then file with DOT’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection online, by mail or on 855-368-4200.

DOT’s complaint page tells you to contact the airline first. American’s refund contact form appears in search results on 14 Sep 2026 as: “Request a refund or receipt, or check on your refund status.” Give the booking code, every ticket number, the old and new times, how you paid, and the date you said no to the alternative or the flight left without you.
Name the row of the trigger table that fits your flight and the deadline for your payment method. A letter that cites both tells American which rule you rely on, and your dated copy shows when you asked.
After you file, DOT directs the airline to respond to you, with a copy to DOT, and does not investigate every service complaint. Paid with a UK-issued card? Section 75 and chargeback give you a second route through the card issuer. The form, the postal address and the rest of the process are on the DOT complaint page.
Send your refund letter in writing, keep a dated copy, and file with DOT once the 7-business-day or 20-calendar-day deadline passes without the money.
Not your situation? A flight departing an EU airport falls under EU261 and one departing the UK under UK261; Canadian routes fall under the Air Passenger Protection Regulations. Federal rules for all US airlines sit in the US DOT hub. Unsure? Find which law covers your flight or read the transatlantic flight guide.
