# Vueling delay and cancellation compensation

Vueling flight delay compensation is €250 to €600 per passenger under EU261, or £220 to £520 under UK261, once you reach your final destination 3 hours or more late and Vueling cannot prove extraordinary circumstances. Its Spanish licence brings arrivals into the EU and the UK inside those rules too.

**Key facts: Vueling**

| Fact | Detail |
|:--|:--|
| Operating company | Vueling Airlines, S.A., Community carrier (Spain) |
| Amounts | EU261 €250/€400/€600; UK261 £220/£350/£520 |
| Arrivals covered | EU261 into the EU; UK261 into the UK |
| Enforcement body, Spanish airports | Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea (AESA), División de Derechos de los Pasajeros |
| ADR scheme (UK) | Not among the members listed in the CAA ADR lists checked 15 Sep 2026; CAA PACT may help |

## How much does Vueling pay under EU261 for a delay of 3 hours or more?

3 hours late at the final destination is the EU261 trigger: from that point Vueling owes €250, €400 or €600 per passenger, set by the great-circle distance to that destination. On flights covered by UK261 the figures are £220, £350 and £520. Proof of extraordinary circumstances cancels either payment.

| Distance to final destination | EU261 (€) | UK261 (£) |
|:--|:--|:--|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 | £220 |
| Over 1,500 km, between two EU airports | €400, no reduced delay step | Not covered on Vueling |
| 1,500-3,500 km, other flights | €400 | £350 |
| Over 3,500 km, other flights | €600; €300 at Vueling's option if under 4 hours late | £520; £260 if between three and four hours late |

A reduced delay step exists only in the last row.

The 3-hour delay right rests on Sturgeon (C-402/07 and C-432/07, 2009) under EU261, and on article 6 of UK261 since 14 December 2023.

Our great-circle calculation puts Copenhagen about 1,770 km from Barcelona. Two passengers leaving the aircraft there 3 hours 40 minutes late are owed €400 each, €800 in total: EU-to-EU flights have no cut. Vueling's €300 option exists only on other flights beyond 3,500 km: 3 hours 59 minutes late can mean €300, and from 4 hours 0 minutes €600 is due.

Cancellations carry a separate cut. If Vueling re-routes you, EU261 article 7(2) lets it halve the amount. Vueling's cut needs the re-routed flight to arrive no more than 2 hours late (up to 1,500 km), 3 hours (1,500-3,500 km, or EU-to-EU over 1,500 km) or 4 hours (all other flights). Notice of 14 days or more removes compensation altogether.

Note when you left the aircraft, then run the [compensation calculator](https://airtravelrights.com/compensation-calculator/?carrier=vueling) or read the [EU261 delay guide](https://airtravelrights.com/eu261/flight-delay-compensation/) and the [EU261 overview](https://airtravelrights.com/eu261/).

## Which Vueling flights do EU261 and UK261 cover, and what depends on the licence check?

1 operating licence decides arrival coverage on every flight Vueling operates: Vueling Airlines, S.A. is a Community carrier licensed in Spain (European Commission list, data at 19 May 2026). Departures from EU and UK airports are covered on any airline, and that licence adds arrivals into both.

**Vueling licence status**

| Operating company | Licence status | EU261 into the EU | UK261 into the UK | Licence source |
|:--|:--|:--|:--|:--|
| Vueling Airlines, S.A. | Community carrier (Spain), category A, effective since 28/06/2004 | Yes | Yes | [EC list](https://transport.ec.europa.eu/document/download/7d7c51df-f11d-4a0c-815c-28a5ae4264b5_en?filename=eu_air_carriers_by_country_holding_an_active_operating_licence.pdf) |

[Iberia](https://airtravelrights.com/airlines/iberia/) and [British Airways](https://airtravelrights.com/airlines/british-airways/) hold their own licences, Spanish and UK, so an Iberia claim or a British Airways claim follows its own card.

**Which rules apply to your Vueling flight**

| Where the flight starts and ends | EU261 (€) | UK261 (£) |
|:--|:--|:--|
| EU airport to the EU or outside the EU and UK | Yes | No |
| EU airport to the UK | Yes | On arrival |
| UK airport to the EU | On arrival | Yes |
| UK airport to outside the EU | No | Yes |
| Outside the EU and UK into the EU | On arrival | No |
| Outside the EU and UK into the UK | No | On arrival |

An "on arrival" cell drops out if you already received benefits or compensation and assistance in the country you left. Departures from Iceland, Norway and Switzerland count as EU rows; flights into those three, from the UK too, are not mapped.

### When does UK261 cover a Vueling flight?

UK261 covers every Vueling flight leaving a UK airport. Article 3(1)(b)(i) adds flights arriving in the UK, unless you already received benefits or compensation and assistance in the country you left. Our calculation puts London [Gatwick](https://airtravelrights.com/airports/gatwick/) about 1,180 km from Florence: £220 per passenger under UK261 for arriving 3 hours or more late.

Not your situation? Lost Vueling bags: [Montreal Convention](https://airtravelrights.com/montreal-convention/). Canada: [Air Passenger Protection Regulations](https://airtravelrights.com/canada-appr/). Flying in the US? US federal rules differ: [US DOT rules](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/). Unsure? [Which law covers my flight](https://airtravelrights.com/which-law-covers-my-flight/).

Article 3(5) of EU261 puts the duty on the operating air carrier, so check the operating carrier line on your booking: another airline's licence would decide the arrival rules.

## How do you claim compensation from Vueling directly?

7 days is the article 8(1) refund deadline, and the choice of a refund is yours. A passenger report on r/travel (Reddit, July 2025) describes a cancelled direct Amsterdam to Palma Vueling flight: "I said I prefer to just get a refund and book with a different airline that has a direct flight."

Source: EU261 arts. 7(3), 8(1), 15(1) - eur-lex.europa.eu; UK261 arts. 2(n), 7(3) - legislation.gov.uk, checked 2026-09-15; Vueling page titles in Google UK results, 15 September 2026.

The post reports the answer it got: "They refused and said this is not an option." It went up 48 days before the flight, so notice that early rules out compensation, not the refund. The written claim itself carries each passenger's name, the flight number and date, the time you left the aircraft, the regime and the amount.

### Where are Vueling's claim pages?

Google UK results on 15 September 2026 listed [Claim and refunds](https://help.vueling.com/hc/en-gb/articles/19798807271441-Claim-and-refunds), [Delay in my flight](https://help.vueling.com/hc/en-gb/articles/24476547783569-Delay-in-my-flight) and [Cancelled flights](https://help.vueling.com/hc/en-gb/articles/23136450765841-Cancelled-flights) on help.vueling.com, with [Delayed or lost bag claim](https://help.vueling.com/hc/en-gb/articles/19798799296273-Delayed-or-lost-bag-claim) for luggage.

A [voucher](https://airtravelrights.com/uk261/cancelled-flight-refund-voucher/) needs your signed agreement, so ask Vueling for a bank transfer and give your account details in the claim itself. Which forms of payment article 7(3) allows instead, and the article 15(1) bar on contracting out of any of it, are set out on the [EU261 hub](https://airtravelrights.com/eu261/).

## Which Vueling refusal reasons count as extraordinary circumstances?

Article 5(3) of EU261 lets Vueling refuse compensation only by proving extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken; the text gives no definition. UK261 article 2(o) defines the term. A valid refusal removes only the fixed amount.

Source: EU261 art. 5(3) - eur-lex.europa.eu; UK261 arts. 2(o), 5(3), 6(4) - legislation.gov.uk; Wallentin-Hermann (C-549/07, 2008) - eur-lex.europa.eu, checked 2026-09-15.

Wallentin-Hermann (C-549/07, 2008) is where the technical excuse gets decided, and it binds UK courts as well as Spanish ones. Put the cause Vueling names against it: [which reasons qualify](https://airtravelrights.com/eu261/extraordinary-circumstances/) works through them one at a time, and [the UK reading of article 2(o)](https://airtravelrights.com/uk261/extraordinary-circumstances/) separately.

Strike and weather refusals have their own guides: [strike flight compensation](https://airtravelrights.com/uk261/strike-flight-compensation/) and [flights cancelled due to weather](https://airtravelrights.com/flight-cancelled-due-to-weather/).

Care survives a valid refusal, and so does your choice between a refund and re-routing. Where Vueling failed to provide care, reimbursement is limited to amounts that were necessary, appropriate and reasonable.

### If Vueling rejects your claim

A passenger report on r/Flights (Reddit, November 2025) says Vueling e-mailed the night before a Copenhagen departure to cancel the flight for bad weather. The poster adds: "Vueling now claims the flight “operated as normal”".

Ask Vueling in writing for the exact event, the flight it hit and the measures it took, quoting its own messages.

## Where do you escalate a refused Vueling claim?

8 weeks without a reply, or a final refusal, opens the CAA's Passenger Advice and Complaints Team (PACT) for UK261 claims: Vueling is not among the members listed in the CAA ADR lists checked 15 Sep 2026. EU261 complaints go to the national enforcement body of the departure country, or the arrival country for flights from outside the EU.

Source: CAA, Alternative Dispute Resolution and How the CAA can help - caa.co.uk; EU261 art. 16, Commission NEB list (updated 27 August 2026) - transport.ec.europa.eu, checked 2026-09-15.

A MoneySavingExpert forum reply (April 2025), in a thread about a Vueling denied-boarding complaint, reads: "if Vueling fail to stump up then you could indeed try the CAA (Vueling aren't part of an ADR scheme), but they have limited enforcement powers".

The CAA says PACT is "only likely to consider your complaint if the airline or airport" is not a member of an approved ADR body, and only after a written complaint. It says whether it thinks your complaint is valid and, if so, raises it with Vueling, but in the CAA's words "we do not have the legal powers to impose a solution on an airline". No appeal lies against that view. Court stays open.

For EU261, the Commission list names the Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea (AESA), División de Derechos de los Pasajeros, for flights from Spanish airports.

## How long do you have to claim against Vueling?

6 years is the UK261 court deadline against Vueling in England and Wales, because article 3(9) applies section 9 of the Limitation Act 1980; Northern Ireland also allows 6 years. EU261 leaves the period to each member state's own limitation rules.

Scotland is the open point. The Prescription and Limitation (Scotland) Act 1973 sets 5 years, no Scottish court has decided whether that period governs a UK261 claim, and if a Scottish court could hear yours, file inside 5 years.

Spain's period is 5 years, under article 1964.2 of the Código Civil. A second statute is why people get it wrong: the Ley de Navegación Aérea sets 6 months in article 124, but that chapter covers liability in case of accident, not a flat-rate delay payment. [Claiming in Spain](https://airtravelrights.com/eu261/claim-in-spain/) runs through AESA, which opens nothing until the passenger has written to the airline - Vueling's own claim form does that job, and a court asks for no letter at all.

PACT runs its own clock: no complaint with less than a year left to sue, which in England and Wales leaves 5 of the 6 years. There, claims up to £10,000 normally use the [small claims](https://airtravelrights.com/uk261/small-claims-court/) track.

Compare [Iberia](https://airtravelrights.com/airlines/iberia/) and [Air Europa](https://airtravelrights.com/airlines/air-europa/), licensed in Spain too, or [Ryanair](https://airtravelrights.com/airlines/ryanair/), which the CAA lists with AviationADR, or [Transavia](https://airtravelrights.com/airlines/transavia/), split between Dutch and French licences.
