# JetBlue: bumping pay up to $2,150; EU261/UK261 from EU/UK

Source: https://airtravelrights.com/airlines/jetblue/

> Declined JetBlue's rebooking? The refund is due in 7 business days on a credit card purchase. UK261 pays £220–£520 only on JetBlue flights leaving a UK airport.

# JetBlue delays, cancellations and refunds: your rights

$2,150 caps what US federal rules make JetBlue pay for bumping you involuntarily from an oversold flight; refunds have no such cap. A canceled or significantly delayed flight earns a refund if you do not accept the alternative. From an EU or UK airport, a JetBlue flight arriving 3 hours or more late pays €250-€600 (EU261) or £220-£520 (UK261), barring extraordinary circumstances. Flights into the EU or the UK get neither.

## Does JetBlue pay cash compensation for delays in the US?

No federal rule makes JetBlue pay cash for a delayed or canceled domestic flight, according to the DOT's Fly Rights guide (last updated 26 Sep 2025). JetBlue's cash compensation entry on the DOT Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard, last updated 11 Sep 2025, reads "No".

Source: DOT Fly Rights - transportation.gov; DOT dashboard - transportation.gov; FR 2025-20042 (90 FR 51230) - federalregister.gov, checked 2026-09-15.

Fly Rights is blunt: "Contrary to popular belief, for domestic itineraries airlines are not required to compensate passengers whose flights are delayed or canceled." On domestic trips, the law requires compensation only when you are bumped from an oversold flight.

On 17 Nov 2025, DOT withdrew its 11 Dec 2024 advance notice of proposed rulemaking on cash compensation, rebooking and amenities.

DOT says passengers on international trips may be able to recover delay or cancellation expenses under Article 19 of the [Montreal Convention](https://airtravelrights.com/montreal-convention/). Article 19 repays costs, not a fixed sum.

See [EU261](https://airtravelrights.com/eu261/), [UK261](https://airtravelrights.com/uk261/), the [Air Passenger Protection Regulations](https://airtravelrights.com/canada-appr/) for flights to, from and within Canada, [transatlantic flight compensation](https://airtravelrights.com/transatlantic-flight-compensation/), [which law covers my flight](https://airtravelrights.com/which-law-covers-my-flight/), the [US DOT hub](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/) or [delayed and canceled flight rights](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/delayed-canceled-flight-rights/).

## What has JetBlue committed to for controllable delays and cancellations?

A wait of 3 hours or more is the threshold in the dashboard's cash, credit and miles rows for disruptions within the airline's control. JetBlue's column, on the detail page last updated 11 Sep 2025, reads "No" for cash compensation and "Yes" for a credit or voucher. Frequent-flyer miles are not marked Yes.

**JetBlue on the [DOT dashboard](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/airline-customer-service-commitments/)**

| Commitment for a disruption within the airline's control | JetBlue |
|:--|:--|
| Cash compensation, wait of 3 hours or more | No |
| Credit or voucher, wait of 3 hours or more | Yes |
| Frequent-flyer miles, wait of 3 hours or more | Not marked Yes |
| Hotel for an overnight stay | Yes |
| Ground transportation to and from the hotel | Yes |
| Rebooking on a partner airline | Yes |

Of the 9 airlines, only Alaska, [Hawaiian Airlines](https://airtravelrights.com/airlines/hawaiian-airlines/), JetBlue and Southwest are marked Yes for a credit or voucher. Partner rebooking reads No only for Allegiant, Frontier and Southwest.

The dashboard also has rows for same-airline rebooking and meals. Check JetBlue's entries there.

These are promises in JetBlue's customer service plan, not federal rights. "Airlines are required to adhere to the promises that they make in their customer service plan," the dashboard page says.

Since 10 Dec 2025, the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection does not treat cancellations or lengthy delays from unscheduled maintenance required by a non-deferrable airworthiness directive as "within airline control" for these commitments, until further notice or the end of the cause-of-delay rulemaking.

JetBlue's plan page is titled [Customer Service Plan](https://www.jetblue.com/customer-assurance/customer-service-plan) (jetblue.com, listed in search results 14 Sep 2026). The [airline commitments comparison](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/airline-customer-service-commitments/) covers all 9. Ask JetBlue for the hotel booking before paying for a room.

## When must JetBlue refund your ticket?

7 business days for a credit card purchase, or 20 calendar days for cash, check, debit card or other payment, is the prompt refund deadline JetBlue must meet under 14 CFR 260.2. The refund is due when your flight is canceled or significantly delayed or changed and you do not accept an alternative.

| Change to your JetBlue flight | Domestic | International |
|:--|:--|:--|
| Departs earlier than scheduled | 3 hours or more | 6 hours or more |
| Arrives later than scheduled | 3 hours or more | 6 hours or more |
| Different departure or arrival airport | Counts | Counts |
| More connection points | Counts | Counts |
| Downgrade to a lower class of service | Counts | Counts |
| Disability-specific connection or aircraft change | Counts | Counts |

Source: 14 CFR 260.2, 260.6, 260.7 - ecfr.gov; FR 2026-13675 (91 FR 41556) - federalregister.gov, checked 2026-09-15.

One row is enough. A domestic flight moved to land at 16:10 instead of 13:00 is 3 hours 10 minutes later, so it counts; 2 hours 50 minutes would not.

Under 14 CFR 260.6(a), the fare, taxes and ancillary fees come back if JetBlue offers no alternative, you reject it, or you do not respond and the flight departs. A travel credit replaces the money only if you affirmatively accept it after notice of your refund right. It must stay valid for at least 5 years.

A post in r/jetblue (u/YoMamaAndie, March 2026), written after a cancellation:

> "When I got the notification in the app it said a refund would be issued but now the app says I am not due a refund and it sounds like I'll get travel credit instead??" (passenger report)

A credit you never affirmatively accepted does not replace that refund.

Until 7 Jul 2027, DOT does not enforce the cancellation-refund requirements in 14 CFR 260.6, 260.9 and 399.80(l) where a flight is merely renumbered, you are rebooked on it and there is no "significant change or delay".

Want the money? Decline the rebooking and the credit, then request it on JetBlue's [Refunds](https://www.jetblue.com/help/refunds) page (jetblue.com, listed in search results 14 Sep 2026). See [DOT refund rules](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/airline-refund-rules/).

## How much does JetBlue pay if you are bumped from an oversold flight?

$2,150 is the most JetBlue owes under DOT rules for bumping you from an oversold flight against your will, and the cap covers denied boarding only. It limits the 400%-of-fare payment due when a domestic alternate arrives 2 hours or more late, or an international one from the US 4 hours or more late.

| Your alternate flight arrives | Domestic | International, departing the US |
|:--|:--|:--|
| 1 hour late or less | $0 | $0 |
| More than 1 hour, less than 2 hours late | 200% of one-way fare, max $1,075 | 200% of one-way fare, max $1,075 |
| 2 hours to less than 4 hours late | 400% of one-way fare, max $2,150 | 200% of one-way fare, max $1,075 |
| 4 hours or more late, or no alternate flight | 400% of one-way fare, max $2,150 | 400% of one-way fare, max $2,150 |

Source: 14 CFR 250.2, 250.5(a)-(b), 250.5(e) (caps reviewed every two years), 250.6 - ecfr.gov, checked 2026-09-15.

The columns split only between 2 and 4 hours.

The rule covers nonstop segments starting in the US on aircraft of 30 or more seats. [Volunteers](https://airtravelrights.com/denied-boarding-compensation/) come first. A voucher counts only if it is worth at least the cash and you are told so.

On a $380 one-way domestic fare, an alternate 90 minutes late earns $760, and one 2 hours 15 minutes late earns $1,520. On a $900 international fare from the US, an alternate 3 hours late earns 200%, capped from $1,800 down to $1,075.

Exceptions include not meeting ticketing or check-in rules, a seat elsewhere on the flight at no extra charge, and a smaller aircraft swapped in for operational or safety reasons.

Article 4 of EU261 or UK261 never reaches a JetBlue flight leaving the US, so bumping pay on one nonstop flight never doubles. Get the cash figure in writing before accepting a voucher ([bumped flight compensation](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/bumped-flight-compensation/)).

## Why do EU261 and UK261 cover JetBlue only on flights departing Europe or the UK?

EU261 covers every airline leaving an airport in the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland. UK261 covers every airline leaving a UK airport. Inbound, EU261 needs a Community carrier. UK261 needs a Community or UK air carrier for flights into the UK. JETBLUE AIRWAYS CORPORATION is neither. Its flights into the EU or the UK are not covered.

**Which rules apply to your JetBlue flight**

| Your JetBlue flight | EU261 (€) | UK261 (£) | US DOT bumping rule ($) |
|:--|:--|:--|:--|
| Within the US | No | No | Yes |
| From the US to an EU or UK airport | No | No | Yes, on the nonstop segment leaving the US |
| From an airport in the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland | Yes | No | No |
| From a UK airport | No | Yes | No |

### How much do EU261 and UK261 pay on a JetBlue departure?

| Distance | EU261, flight from an EU airport | UK261, flight from a UK airport |
|:--|:--|:--|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 | £220 |
| 1,500-3,500 km | €400 | £350 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 (intra-EU: €400); €300 at 3 to under 4 hours late, carrier's option | £520; £260 between three and four hours late (CAA) |

Both pay when you reach the final destination 3 hours or more late, barring extraordinary circumstances. UK261 says so in article 6(3). For EU261, the Court of Justice held in Sturgeon (C-402/07 and C-432/07, 2009) that such passengers may claim article 7 compensation.

Source: EU261 art. 7(1)-(2); Sturgeon, para 63 - eur-lex.europa.eu; UK261 arts. 6(3), 7(1)-(2) - legislation.gov.uk; CAA, Delays - caa.co.uk, checked 2026-09-15.

### How do you claim EU261 or UK261 from JetBlue?

For JetBlue delay compensation on these flights, write to JetBlue with the flight number, date, arrival times and band amount, citing article 7. JetBlue's site lists a [Share a Concern](https://www.jetblue.com/contact-us/share-a-concern) page (jetblue.com, listed in search results 14 Sep 2026). Check the band with the [compensation calculator](https://airtravelrights.com/compensation-calculator/?carrier=jetblue).

> Rather not write to JetBlue yourself about a flight from an EU or UK airport? [AirHelp (third-party claim service)](https://airtravelrights.com/partner/airhelp?ref=atr-al-jetblue-m) can take the claim on, no win no fee, and keeps a fee from any payout; JetBlue's [Share a Concern](https://www.jetblue.com/contact-us/share-a-concern) page stays free.

## Where do you escalate a refused JetBlue claim?

3 escalation routes follow a JetBlue refusal. US refund or bumping disputes go to the DOT Office of Aviation Consumer Protection. A UK departure can go to the CAA's Passenger Advice and Complaints Team (PACT), and an EU departure to the enforcement body of that country.

Source: 14 CFR 259.7(c) - ecfr.gov; DOT and CAA complaint pages; EU261 art. 16(1) - eur-lex.europa.eu, checked 2026-09-15.

JetBlue must acknowledge a complaint within 30 days and answer in writing within 60. DOT directs the airline to reply but does not investigate every service complaint.

### If JetBlue rejects your claim

Refused a US refund? Reply citing 14 CFR 260.6, then follow the [DOT airline complaint guide](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/airline-complaint/). Refused EU261 or UK261 compensation? Ask JetBlue for the cause and the reasonable measures it took. Extraordinary circumstances remove only article 7 compensation, not care or re-routing.

On a UK departure there is no ADR step: none of the CAA's ADR lists names JetBlue (read 15 Sep 2026). PACT can consider the complaint once you dispute JetBlue's reply or get none within 8 weeks. It will not if less than a year remains to sue. It cannot impose a solution. On an EU departure, article 16(1) of EU261 points to the departure country's enforcement body. Court routes: [refused compensation guide](https://airtravelrights.com/airline-refused-compensation/); airline ADR: [ADR map](https://airtravelrights.com/uk261/airline-adr-map/).
