# easyJet refund: cancelled flights, vouchers, your own cancellation and taxes back

An easyJet refund depends on who ended the booking. When easyJet cancels, you choose a refund, which easyJet says it processes within 7 days, or a 12-month voucher. When you cancel, the fare is non-refundable after the first 24 hours, but the Air Passenger Duty can be claimed back.

Compensation claims against easyJet are covered on the [easyJet page](https://airtravelrights.com/airlines/easyjet/). The rules for cancelling your own flight with any airline sit in the [guide to cancelling a flight](https://airtravelrights.com/cancel-flight-refund/).

## When does easyJet have to refund you?

7 days is the UK261 limit for reimbursing the full cost of the ticket when easyJet cancels your flight or delays it by at least 5 hours. easyJet's help page says it is "processing refund requests within 7 days", and the money may take a few extra days to reach your bank account.

Source: UK261 art. 8(1)(a), 5(1)(a) and 6(1)(iii) - legislation.gov.uk; easyJet delays and cancellations help page - easyjet.com, checked 2026-10-05.

After a cancellation, the refund is the ticket money, owed whatever the notice and whatever the cause. Compensation is a separate sum of £220, £350 or £520 by distance under article 7(1). It is owed only when easyJet cancels with less than 14 days' notice, or you reach your final destination 3 hours or more late. Extraordinary circumstances remove the compensation, never the refund. With less than 14 days' notice, a replacement flight close to the original times can also mean no compensation is due.

Delayed by over 5 hours? easyJet's help page says "you can cancel your delayed flight and apply for a full refund". Its terms pay refunds "to the Booker using the original payment method or original easyJet account", normally in the original currency.

Request the refund yourself in Manage Bookings and follow it on easyJet's track-my-refund-request page. If easyJet cancelled with less than 14 days' notice, check the compensation on the [easyJet page](https://airtravelrights.com/airlines/easyjet/) and claim it free through [easyJet's claim portal](https://www.easyjet.com/claim/en/eu261). If easyJet refuses, AviationADR is the free next step.

> Rather not claim the compensation yourself? [AirHelp (third-party claim service)](https://airtravelrights.com/partner/airhelp?ref=atr-al-easyjet-rf) works no win no fee and keeps a fee from any payout.

Keep easyJet's cancellation email: its date proves how much notice you had.

## Voucher or refund after an easyJet cancellation?

12 months from the date of issue is how long the easyJet voucher lasts. It covers the full value of your booking, and so does the alternative, a refund paid to the account you booked with. A third option is to switch to another easyJet flight free; all three sit in Manage Bookings.

The voucher is your choice, not easyJet's. UK261 article 8(1)(a) pays the reimbursement "by the means provided for in Article 7(3)", and article 7(3) allows travel vouchers only "with the signed agreement of the passenger". Without that agreement, the reimbursement stays owed in money, within seven days.

| Option after an easyJet cancellation | What you get | Timing |
|:--|:--|:--|
| Refund | Full value of the booking, paid to the account you booked with | easyJet says it processes requests within 7 days |
| Voucher | Full value of the booking as a voucher | Valid 12 months from the date of issue |
| Switch flight | Another easyJet flight, free of charge | Chosen in Manage Bookings |

Refund and voucher carry the same full booking value, but the voucher runs out 12 months after issue. Take it only if you are sure you will use it within that year.

In Manage Bookings, choose "Request a refund" if you want the money rather than the voucher.

## Can you cancel an easyJet flight yourself and get money back?

£49 online or £55 through Customer Services is the Cancellation Fee easyJet deducts from a full refund when you cancel the whole booking within 24 hours of making it. After 24 hours, easyJet's help page says it is "unable to offer a refund", although you can still change the flight or the name.

| easyJet fact | Amount or deadline |
|:--|:--|
| Cancel the whole booking within 24 hours of making it | £49 online, £55 via Customer Services |
| Change a flight more than 60 days before departure | £30 online, £35 via Customer Services, per passenger per flight |
| Change a flight 60 days or less before departure | £49 online, £54 via Customer Services, per passenger per flight |
| Claim back Government Tax (Air Passenger Duty) | Within 6 calendar months of the scheduled departure date |
| Refund after an easyJet cancellation | Processed within 7 days, according to easyJet |

The 24-hour refund does not apply less than 2 hours before the scheduled departure time of the first flight. Outside the 24 hours, serious illness or bereavement can still bring a refund or a flight voucher, at easyJet's discretion.

There is no 14-day cooling-off period for a flight. Part 3 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 gives 14 days to cancel a service contract made at a distance, but regulation 27(2)(c) takes contracts "for passenger transport services" out of Part 3. UK261 gives no refund either: article 1(1) covers denied boarding, cancellation and delay, and a flight that leaves without you is none of the three.

Changing the flight costs a fee but keeps the booking. Take 2 passengers on one flight: a change 45 days before departure costs 2 x £49 = £98 online, while the same change 61 days before costs 2 x £30 = £60, each plus any fare difference. If the new fare is lower, easyJet does not refund the difference, and every change must be made at least 2 hours before departure. A Flex Pass, £14 per passenger per flight, allows one change of each flight without the change fee.

Count the days to departure before you choose: the online change fee rises by £19 per passenger once 60 days or less remain.

## How do you get Air Passenger Duty back from easyJet?

6 calendar months from the scheduled departure date is the deadline easyJet's help page sets for a tax refund on a flight you did not take. Its conditions of carriage say: "You can claim a full refund of Government Tax (as listed in Fees and Charges) for the flight(s) you do not take", by contacting Customer Services.

Source: easyJet terms and conditions s.5 "Refund of Government Tax"; easyJet cancelling-your-flight help page - easyjet.com, checked 2026-10-05.

The conditions define Government Tax as "Air Passenger Duty in the United Kingdom and/or equivalent passenger tax levied by government in certain jurisdictions". Neither the conditions nor the help page names an administration fee.

HMRC's rates from 1 April 2026, for flights from UK airports outside Northern Ireland and the Scottish Highlands and Islands, set the reduced rate at £8 for a domestic flight and £15 for Band A, up to 2,000 miles from London to the destination's capital city. The reduced rate covers the lowest class of travel with a seat pitch under 40 inches. With no fee named in easyJet's terms, that is roughly what a short-haul no-show gets back per passenger. Check the Government Tax listed for your flight before you claim.

There is tax to return because APD attaches to the passenger actually being carried. Finance Act 1994 section 28 charges it on "the carriage on a chargeable aircraft of any chargeable passenger"; it "becomes due when the aircraft first takes off on the passenger's flight" and is paid by the operator. A passenger who never boards is never carried.

easyJet's terms also say that missing or not taking a flight "does not affect the other flights on your Booking", so you can claim the tax on a missed outbound and still fly the return.

Contact easyJet Customer Services with the booking reference and the flight date within the 6 months.

## What if easyJet refuses or delays your refund?

8 weeks without a reply from easyJet to your complaint opens AviationADR, the free scheme easyJet belongs to, and you have 12 months from easyJet's final response to file. A decision you accept binds easyJet, and you keep the right to go to court. Complain to easyJet first.

In the complaint, cite UK261 article 8(1)(a) for a cancelled flight, or the "Refund of Government Tax" clause in easyJet's terms for a flight you did not take.

Paid by credit card? Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 gives you a "like claim against the creditor" for easyJet's misrepresentation or breach of contract. It covers a single item with a cash price above £100 and up to £30,000, judged by the price easyJet attached to that item, not the amount on the card. The [Section 75 and chargeback guide](https://airtravelrights.com/section-75-chargeback-flight-refund/) covers the steps.

Send the complaint in writing and put the date 8 weeks later in your diary.
