> Flying American Airlines from Europe or the UK? EU261 pays up to €600, UK261 up to £520. US credit card refunds are due in 7 business days.

# American Airlines delays, cancellations and refunds: your rights

American Airlines delay compensation exists only on flights that depart an EU or UK airport. There, EU261 pays €250 to €600 and UK261 pays £220 to £520 per passenger if you reach your final destination 3 hours or more late. On a US domestic trip, federal rules cover refunds, bumping and tarmac waits, not cash for a delay.

## Does American Airlines pay cash compensation for delays in the US?

No federal rule makes American Airlines pay cash for a US delay. For domestic trips, the DOT's Fly Rights page (updated 26 September 2025) says airlines "are not required to compensate passengers whose flights are delayed or canceled". American Airlines' cash compensation entry on the DOT dashboard (last updated 11 September 2025) reads "No".

Source: US DOT, Fly Rights - transportation.gov; FR 2025-20042 (90 FR 51230) - federalregister.gov, checked 2026-09-15.

As of 17 November 2025, DOT withdrew its December 2024 advance notice of proposed rulemaking on cash compensation, rebooking and amenities.

DOT says passengers on international trips may be able to recover their expenses from a delayed or canceled flight under Article 19 of the Montreal Convention, by claiming with the airline. This pays back what you spent, not a set sum. Article 22(1) caps it at 6,303 SDR per passenger, and the airline is not liable if it proves it took all measures reasonably required, or that it was impossible to take them.

On board, American Airlines must give you the chance to leave the plane before a [tarmac delay](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/tarmac-delay-rule/) at a US airport passes 3 hours on a domestic flight or 4 hours on an international one. Safety, security and air traffic control can override that. Food and drinking water are due no later than 2 hours after the tarmac delay begins.

Keep every meal and taxi receipt from an international delay and send them with your claim.

## What has American Airlines committed to for controllable delays and cancellations?

3 hours of waiting is where the DOT dashboard (last updated 11 Sep 2025) tracks cash, credit and miles, and American Airlines has no "Yes" in any of the three. For disruptions within its control, it commits to partner-airline rebooking, a hotel for an overnight stay and ground transport to and from the hotel.

| DOT dashboard commitment | American Airlines |
|:--|:--|
| Rebooking on a partner airline | Yes |
| Hotel for an overnight stay | Yes |
| Ground transport to and from the hotel | Yes |
| Cash compensation, wait of 3 hours or more | No |
| Credit or voucher, wait of 3 hours or more | Not marked "Yes" (only Alaska, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Southwest are) |
| Frequent-flyer miles, wait of 3 hours or more | Not marked "Yes" (only Alaska and Hawaiian are) |

Source: US DOT, Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard (last updated 11 Sep 2025) - transportation.gov; 14 CFR 259.5 - ecfr.gov, checked 2026-09-15.

A controllable delay that strands you overnight earns a hotel, but no cash. These commitments bind through the airline's own plan, not as federal rights: "Airlines are required to adhere to the promises that they make in their customer service plan." The [American Airlines customer service plan](https://www.aa.com/web/i18n/customer-service/support/customer-service-plan.html) (aa.com, listed in search results 14 Sep 2026) sets them out.

From 10 December 2025, DOT's Office of Aviation Consumer Protection does not treat cancellations and lengthy delays from unscheduled maintenance required by a non-deferrable airworthiness directive as "within airline control". That applies until further notice or the end of the cause-of-delay rulemaking. The [customer service commitments guide](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/airline-customer-service-commitments/) compares all nine airlines on the dashboard.

Source: FR 2025-22415 (90 FR 57138) - federalregister.gov, checked 2026-09-15.

Before you book a hotel yourself, ask American Airlines which cause it recorded for the disruption.

## When must American Airlines refund your ticket?

A canceled flight, or a departure 3 hours or more earlier or an arrival 3 hours or more later on a domestic trip (6 hours internationally), makes American Airlines owe you a full refund. That covers fare, taxes and ancillary fees, as long as you do not accept the rebooking, credit or voucher on offer.

Time is not the only trigger. A different origin or destination airport also counts as a significant change, and so do extra connection points, a downgrade to a lower class, or disability-specific connection or aircraft changes.

Silence does not cost you the DOT refund. It is due when the airline offers no alternative, when you reject the offer, or when you do not respond and do not fly. A trip credit or voucher counts only if it was offered as an explicit alternative, you were told of your refund right, and you affirmatively accepted it. It must stay valid for at least 5 years.

| How you paid | Refund deadline |
|:--|:--|
| Credit card | 7 business days |
| Cash, check, debit card or other method | 20 calendar days |

Source: 14 CFR 260.2 ("prompt refund"), 260.6, 260.7 - ecfr.gov; FR 2026-13675 (91 FR 41556) - federalregister.gov, checked 2026-09-15.

Until 7 July 2027, DOT does not enforce the cancellation-refund rules of 14 CFR 260.6, 260.9 and 399.80(l) where a flight is merely renumbered, you are rebooked on it and there is no significant change or delay.

Decline the rebooking in writing and ask for the refund. The [American Airlines refund page](https://airtravelrights.com/airlines/american-airlines/refund/) has the steps.

## How much does American Airlines pay if you are bumped from an oversold flight?

Bumped against your will from an American Airlines nonstop flight leaving a US airport on a plane with 30 or more seats, you get 200% of the one-way fare (capped at $1,075) or 400% (capped at $2,150), set by how late your new flight arrives. Arriving 1 hour or less late pays nothing.

| Your new flight arrives | Domestic | International (departing the US) |
|:--|:--|:--|
| 1 hour or less late | $0 | $0 |
| More than 1 hour, less than 2 hours | 200%, max $1,075 | 200%, max $1,075 |
| 2 hours to less than 4 hours | 400%, max $2,150 | 200%, max $1,075 |
| 4 hours or more, or no new flight | 400%, max $2,150 | 400%, max $2,150 |

Source: 14 CFR 250.2, 250.5(a)-(b), 250.6 - ecfr.gov; caps effective 22 Jan 2025 (89 FR 84815) - federalregister.gov, checked 2026-09-15.

On a $300 one-way domestic fare, a new flight landing 90 minutes late pays $600; one landing 2 hours 30 minutes late pays $1,200. On a $700 fare, the same wait hits the cap: $2,150, not $2,800. The fare counts taxes and fees you had to pay, not optional extras.

No payment is due if you missed ticketing or check-in rules or were seated elsewhere on the plane at no extra charge. The same applies to a smaller plane swapped in for operational or safety reasons, or weight and balance limits on a plane of 60 or fewer seats.

For bumping, the airport you are bumped at decides the rules. Bumped at Madrid, you fall under EU261 article 4, paid in euros; Part 250 covers only nonstop flights that start in the US. Bumped at a US airport on a flight to London, Part 250 pays in dollars and UK261 does not apply, because American Airlines is neither a UK nor a Community carrier.

Get your new flight's arrival time in writing before you leave the gate.

## Why do EU261 and UK261 cover American Airlines only on flights departing Europe or the UK?

EU261 and UK261 cover American Airlines only when the flight departs an EU or UK airport. Inbound, EU261 needs an EU-licensed operating carrier, and UK261 a UK- or EU-licensed one for flights into the UK. The Irish Aviation Authority's example: a delayed New York–[Dublin](https://airtravelrights.com/airports/dublin/) flight is covered on Aer Lingus, not on American Airlines (EASA third-country operator USA-0105).

### EU261 on American Airlines flights from an EU airport

| Distance | EU261 compensation |
|:--|:--|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| 1,500-3,500 km | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km, leaving the EU | €600 (the airline may pay €300 if you arrive 3 to less than 4 hours late) |

Source: EU261 art. 3(1), art. 7(1)-(2) - eur-lex.europa.eu; Sturgeon (C-402/07 and C-432/07, 2009), para 63; Irish Aviation Authority - iaa.ie, checked 2026-09-15.

Sturgeon extended these sums to arrivals three hours or more late. It allows the cut only below four hours, so 4 hours 0 minutes pays €600.

### UK261 on American Airlines flights from a UK airport

| Distance | UK261 compensation |
|:--|:--|
| Up to 1,500 km | £220 |
| 1,500-3,500 km | £350 |
| Over 3,500 km | £520 (£260 if you arrive between 3 and 4 hours late, per the CAA) |

Source: UK261 art. 2(n), art. 3(1)(a), art. 6(3), art. 7(1) - legislation.gov.uk; CAA, Delays - caa.co.uk, checked 2026-09-15.

UK261 counts arrival as the time you are allowed to exit the aircraft.

### How do you claim EU261 or UK261 from American Airlines?

For a flight from an EU airport, claim American Airlines delay compensation in writing through its [Passenger Rights European Union page](https://www.aa.com/i18n/customer-service/support/passenger-rights-european-union.jsp?locale=en_ES) (aa.com, listed in search results 14 Sep 2026). For UK261 flights from London or another UK airport, send the same written claim to the airline and keep a dated copy. Name article 7, your flight number, your departure airport and the sum in euros or pounds. Check the operating carrier on your booking, then your amount in the [compensation calculator](https://airtravelrights.com/compensation-calculator/?carrier=american-airlines).

### If American Airlines rejects your claim

A passenger report on Reddit's r/americanairlines (May 2026) describes a flight home from the EU cancelled an hour before departure, where "the reason was apparently underbooking". Article 5(3) excuses compensation only for extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Flying the plane avoids an underbooking cancellation. Even a valid excuse removes compensation alone, never care or re-routing.

Reply quoting article 5(3), and ask the airline to name the circumstance and the measures it took. The [refused claim guide](https://airtravelrights.com/airline-refused-compensation/) has the next letter.

> Refused on a flight that departed an EU or UK airport? [AirHelp (third-party claim service)](https://airtravelrights.com/partner/airhelp?ref=atr-al-american-airlines-m) can take the claim on, no win no fee, and keeps a fee from any payout; [American Airlines' Passenger Rights European Union page](https://www.aa.com/i18n/customer-service/support/passenger-rights-european-union.jsp?locale=en_ES) (aa.com, listed in search results 14 Sep 2026) and the enforcement bodies stay free.

## Where do you escalate a refused American Airlines claim?

60 days is the limit for American Airlines to answer a complaint in writing under 14 CFR 259.7, and DOT's Office of Aviation Consumer Protection takes US complaints. EU261 refusals go to the departure country's enforcement body. UK261 refusals go to the CAA's PACT, as American Airlines is on no CAA ADR list.

DOT can direct the airline to reply to you, copying DOT, but does not look into every service complaint. The [DOT complaint guide](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/airline-complaint/) has the form.

Source: US DOT, File a consumer complaint - transportation.gov; 14 CFR 259.7(c) - ecfr.gov, checked 2026-09-15.

For an EU departure, the [Irish Aviation Authority](https://airtravelrights.com/eu261/ireland-flight-compensation/) advises complaining to the body of the State the flight was due to depart from. The Commission's list names AESA for Spain and the DGAC for France; for Germany it is the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt.

American Airlines is on none of the CAA's [ADR lists](https://airtravelrights.com/uk261/airline-adr-map/), while Delta is under AviationADR. PACT, the CAA's Passenger Advice and Complaints Team, can consider your case once the airline has refused a written complaint or not replied within 8 weeks. It can take the case up but has no "legal powers to impose a solution on an airline". It also turns away cases with less than a year left to sue: 6 years in England and Wales ([Limitation Act 1980](https://airtravelrights.com/flight-compensation-time-limits/), section 9).

## How long does American Airlines take to pay compensation?

No deadline in article 7 of EU261 or UK261 fixes when American Airlines must pay compensation on a flight departing an EU or UK airport. Reported by passengers on public forums: compensation received a median of 8.5 days after submitting the claim (n = 4 posts, Jun 2025–Sep 2026).

Reported by passengers on public forums: first reply or decision on a compensation or refund claim after a median of 1.5 days (n = 6 posts, May 2026–Sep 2026). Both are small samples, not promises ([payout-times dataset](https://airtravelrights.com/data/airline-compensation-payout-times/)).

Other money runs on fixed clocks. Article 8(1) of EU261 and UK261 sets seven days for a cancelled-flight refund. Article 4(3) says bumped passengers must be paid immediately.

[British Airways](https://airtravelrights.com/airlines/british-airways/) is a UK air carrier, so UK261 also covers its flights into the UK.

**Not your situation?** A flight departing an EU airport falls under [EU261](https://airtravelrights.com/eu261/) and one departing the UK under [UK261](https://airtravelrights.com/uk261/); Canadian routes fall under the [Air Passenger Protection Regulations](https://airtravelrights.com/canada-appr/), and US federal rules sit in the [US DOT hub](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/) and the [delayed and canceled flight rights guide](https://airtravelrights.com/us-dot/delayed-canceled-flight-rights/).
